Canby, Oregon is one of those towns that’s easy to fall in love with—quiet country charm, a strong sense of community, and just close enough to Portland to keep things convenient. But like any place, it’s not all sunshine and Swan Island (if you know, you know). If you're thinking about moving to Canby, you deserve the full story.

After nearly two decades of calling Canby home, I’m sharing 7 honest truths about living here—plus a few local secrets you’ll want to keep in your back pocket.

1. Canby Is No Longer a Hidden Gem

Once considered a tucked-away secret, Canby has made its way onto the map. More people are discovering its small-town feel, affordable lifestyle, and proximity to Portland and Salem. The downside? Home prices are rising, and traffic is heavier than longtime residents are used to.

Pro Tip: Don’t expect undiscovered territory. Canby is growing and changing fast.

2. Canby Is Growing—Fast

Farms are giving way to new housing developments on both the north and south ends of town. While some locals mourn the changing landscape, growth has brought new restaurants, shops, and amenities.

It reminds me of where Sherwood, Oregon was 20 years ago—on the brink of a boom. If you're looking at buying here, consider how things might look 10 to 20 years from now. A field today could be a neighborhood tomorrow.

3. The Commute Isn’t Always a Breeze

Canby is about 20–25 miles from downtown Portland, and yes, on a Sunday morning it might only take 30 minutes. But during rush hour? Expect delays.

You’ll likely use Highway 99E to access I-5 or I-205, which are both 5–10 miles away, depending on your route. Bonus tip: Canby has a ferry that crosses the Willamette River—peaceful, yes, but also limited in capacity and cash-only.

4. The Small-Town Bubble Is Real

Canby’s community feel is both its greatest strength and a potential culture shock for newcomers. You’ll see familiar faces at the grocery store, the park, and the farmers market. If you’re used to anonymity, this might take some adjustment.

Also, expect change to move slowly. New ideas and businesses sometimes meet resistance. But patience and a community-minded approach go a long way here.

5. Nightlife? Not So Much

If your idea of a fun evening includes craft cocktails and late-night dancing, you might want to head to Portland. Canby’s nightlife is more about small breweries, local music, and seasonal events.

That said, we’ve got some gems: the Canby Beer Library, FOB Taproom, the Wild Hare Saloon (live music), and annual events like Hairfest, the Dahlia Festival, and Thursday Night Markets.

6. The Weather Isn’t for Everyone

Like much of the Willamette Valley, Canby has gray, rainy winters. If you're from out of state, the lack of sun can be an adjustment. But the payoff? Mild, gorgeous summers with cool evenings and lush green surroundings.

Planning a quick escape to Central Oregon or Palm Springs in January? Highly recommended.

7. Community Spirit Is Strong—If You Join In

Canby is a town where people still wave at each other and chat in line at the coffee shop. But the community doesn’t just come to you—you’ve got to get involved.

Whether it’s volunteering at the Canby Center, attending local markets, joining a gym, or supporting small businesses, there are plenty of ways to plug in.

Bonus: A Few Hidden Gems

  • B’s Bake Shoppe: Cozy spot with excellent pastries, sourdough, and coffee.

  • Canby Ferry: A scenic, slow-paced ride that feels like a reset.

  • St. Josef’s Winery: Beautiful countryside location just outside town with delicious local wine.

So—Is Canby perfect? No. But is it a pretty amazing place to live? Absolutely.
