7 Tips for Visiting Canby, Oregon Before You Move: Make the Most of Your Trip

Thinking about moving to Canby, Oregon, Oregon City, or the North Willamette Valley? If so, visiting in person is hands down one of the best things you can do to see if this area is truly the right fit for you.

Hey there, I’m Jennifer Schurter, your local real estate expert for Canby and the surrounding areas. If you’re thinking about making a move, you’re in the right place! In this post, I’m breaking down seven key tips to help you make the most of your visit so you can feel confident about your decision.

Why Visiting Canby Before Moving is a Must

It’s one thing to scroll through home listings online, but actually spending time in the area is a game-changer. You’ll get a real feel for the community, the vibe of different neighborhoods, and how well your lifestyle would fit in. If you’re already in Oregon, planning a weekend trip is easy. But if you’re coming from out of state, a little extra planning will make your visit way more productive.

Here’s how to make the most of your time here!

1. Let’s Grab Coffee and Chat

One of the best ways to get the inside scoop on an area is to talk to someone who actually lives here! I love sitting down with folks who are considering a move and answering their questions about Canby, Oregon City, or anywhere in the North Willamette Valley.

Now, there are certain things I can’t legally discuss (like schools and crime stats, thanks to fair housing laws), but I can absolutely point you to resources and share local insights about neighborhoods, things to do, and what life here is really like.

Not in town yet? No problem! We can set up a Zoom or phone call instead. Either way, I’d love to connect.

2. Visit Over a Weekend for the Full Experience

If possible, plan your visit for a Friday through Sunday trip. Here’s why weekends are best:

  • Farmers markets and local events are in full swing.

  • More open houses are available for home tours.

  • You’ll see how the town really comes to life.

Weekdays are great for checking out daily life, but weekends give you a real sense of the local culture and what it’s like to actually live here.

3. Check Out Open Houses

Even if you’re not ready to buy, open houses are a great way to explore different neighborhoods and get a feel for home styles and price points.

Before your visit, browse local listings and map out which homes you want to check out. While you’re out and about, stop for a pick-me-up at Gwynn’s Willamette Coffee House—it’s one of my favorites!

4. Drive Through Different Neighborhoods (At Different Times of Day!)

Hop in the car and take a cruise through the neighborhoods you’re considering. Pay attention to things like:

  • How well are homes maintained?

  • How’s the traffic?

  • How close are grocery stores, parks, and restaurants?

  • What’s the overall vibe?

And here’s a pro tip: Drive through at different times of day. A neighborhood might feel quiet in the morning but totally different at night. It’s worth checking out!

5. Take Notes & Snap Photos

Trust me, by the end of the weekend, everything will start to blur together. So, keep track of what you like (and don’t like):

  • Use your Notes app to jot down thoughts.

  • Screenshot Google Maps for locations you love.

  • Take pictures of homes, streets, and places that stand out.

You’ll thank yourself later when you’re sorting through all the info!

6. Explore Like a Local

A big part of moving somewhere is knowing what’s there to do when you’re not working. Take some time to check out:

  • Farmers Markets – Canby, Oregon City, and Wilsonville all have great ones.

  • Annual Events – Clackamas County Fair & Rodeo, Hairfest (an amazing tribute band festival), and more.

  • Outdoor Adventures – Walk along the Molalla River State Park, go hiking in the Molalla River Corridor, or take your pup to the off-leash dog park.

  • Local Eats – Grab a bite at Wayward Sandwiches, Backstop Bar & Grill, or one of Canby’s great brewpubs.

The more you explore, the better you’ll know if this place is a good fit.

7. Plan a Follow-Up Visit

If you can, visit more than once.

Canby looks totally different in summer than in winter, and that can impact how you feel about living here. If your first visit is during the rainy season, come back when the flowers bloom in spring. If you visit in summer, return in the fall to see how things change.

The more time you spend here, the more confident you’ll be in your decision.
