One of the biggest myths about moving south of the metro area is that you have to drive back into Portland for a great meal. Not anymore. The culinary scene in South Clackamas County has exploded.

Here are 10 spots (mostly upscale or upscale-casual) that are actually open and perfect for a night out.

1. Canard (Oregon City)

The New Heavyhitter. Yes, that Canard. The team behind Portland’s famous Le Pigeon opened an outpost in Oregon City, bringing their high-end, playful French-inspired cooking to the suburbs. It’s a massive win for the local food scene.

  • Vibe: Trendy, bustling, and incredibly delicious.

2. Filberts Farmhouse Kitchen (Aurora)

Located in a historic farmhouse, this spot serves upscale American comfort food. It feels like a special occasion without being stuffy.

  • Vibe: Rustic elegance. Great for Sunday brunch or a nice dinner.

3. Stone Cliff Inn (Oregon City)

Famous for its location on the cliffs overlooking the Clackamas River. While the “Twilight” filming trails are currently closed, the restaurant itself is open and offers some of the best views in the county.

  • Vibe: Classic Northwest lodge feel with a view that can’t be beat.

4. Nebbiolo Wine Bar & Bistro (Oregon City)

A staple on Main Street. It’s intimate, dark, and perfect for sharing small plates and exploring a deep wine list.

  • Vibe: Romantic and cozy.

5. Oswego Grill (Wilsonville)

A reliable, upscale-casual steakhouse that feels polished. Their happy hour is legendary, but their dinner service is a solid choice for a steak or seafood night.

  • Vibe: Busy, professional, and consistent.

6. The Kitchen at Middleground Farms (Wilsonville)

Experience Dining. This isn’t a traditional restaurant—it’s a culinary experience and cooking school on a hobby farm. You can book special dinners (gazpacho in the garden, etc.) or hands-on classes.

  • Vibe: Interactive, farm-fresh, and memorable.

7. Avanti Restaurant & Bar (West Linn)

Tucked into West Linn’s historic Willamette area, Avanti brings a more modern, Italian‑inspired dining experience to the neighborhood, with craft cocktails, seasonal dishes, and a warm, candlelit atmosphere. It works just as well for a lingering date night as it does for a celebratory dinner with friends.

  • Vibe: Upscale, intimate, and contemporary.

8. Five-0-Three (West Linn)

Just across the river, this local favorite has seen a resurgence with original ownership involved again. It strikes that balance between a “neighborhood joint” and a place nice enough for an anniversary.

  • Vibe: upscale neighborhood gathering spot.

9. Langdon’s Grill (Aurora/Wilsonville)

Located at Langdon Farms Golf Club, this is better than your average course restaurant. The setting is beautiful (great porch), and the food is consistently high-quality American fare.

  • Vibe: Clubby, bright, and relaxed.

10. McMenamins Oregon City (The Old Church)

While McMenamins food is casual pub fare, the location makes this one special. Housed in a restored church, it offers a unique atmosphere for a drink and a burger that feels distinctly “Oregon.”

  • Vibe: Historic and quirky.

Keeping it real (estate): The "reservation" reality

A few years ago, you could walk into most of these places on a Friday night. Now? I highly recommend booking a table a few days in advance, especially for spots like Canard and Filberts. The secret is definitely out!

(Note: Restaurant hours and policies change fast. Always check their websites before heading out!)
